Second Ashes Test Widens Exploits England’s Struggles

It seems Australia is getting into the groove and starting to give tough time to England. England team would have to play out of their skin to make the mark. England was hopeful that the next test would turn around things for them. The second Ashes test puts them in a difficult situation.

Magnificent First Innings Batting in Second Ashes Test

There is a famous saying that all that starts well, ends well. This phrase fits well into the context where Australia was in the match right from the start. First, they would create a gigantic total of 442 for 8 wickets. Then come the Australian furious and fiery bowling attack. The English players could only make 227 in reply to that total. Such a poor response from a team which struggles with form would put the opposition in the better position. Therefore, it was literally all over for the English as they had little chance of a comeback.

Marginal First Innings Batting by England

The English team is lately struggling to form partnerships to withstand pressure. The first test lessons still remain afresh. However, The Ashes demands nerves of steel. If we see the Australian batting lineup, there are contributions down the middle order. A handsome century by Marsh would put the Australians in driving seat. Similarly, when players like Cummins show commitment down the order, it becomes very difficult to make up for that kind of run leak.

The English bowling would not prove much of a difficulty for the other side. They may blame it on the tight cricket schedule but the bowlers have to perform. The 2017 – 18 Ashes series is testing the capabilities of the England bowlers to the limit. The use of six bowlers could not give out any success to the English in first innings. If they want to turn things around in the upcoming test match, they have to do a lot better.

Second Innings Batting by Australia and England

Australia knew it had the advantage now. So, they could care less and a decent total on the board would help their team move forward. Although, their lousy approach could cost them the second Ashes test. English bowlers did try a comeback by pouring their heart out effort. They were hoping that they would get the same kind of support from their batting lineup. It is not easy for any test team to get Australians out at 138.

However, the first innings was too much for the England vs Australia contest to make an impact. This time again the top order would fall like dominoes. Besides the performance of JE Root, there is not much to talk about. DJ Malan and JM Bairstow would add 36 runs each. But these totals could not prove enough for the team. The middle order would repeat the same kind of silly mistakes to lose their wickets cheaply. We must applaud the Australian bowling attack for doing the best they could. It is due to their bowlers that England could not get to the fifth day of the second Ashes test.

The things are slipping away from the hands of England. The horrors of a 5-0 whitewash still haunt them. Let’s hope they put their act together and get their winning streak back.
